what is philosophy

In a book called What is Philosophy, Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari present philosophy as the activity of making concepts. Philosophical concepts are distinguished from concepts in art or science. A philosophical concept involves a process of teaching and learning. Concepts in the western tradition are played out by friends, or characters associated with concepts, for example Descartes and cogito, or Leibniz and monads.

Walk

Lohbado read a passage over breakfast from MIlle Plateaux by Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari and reflected on it during morning walk. It's a poetic/philosophical text with images of the mind and thinking. The book begins with a famous section about rhizome image of knowledge, an open network of infinite exploration in contrast to the older tree model in which everything refers back to a central dominating reference point, a tree trunk, with branches of knowledge. The discussion of mind reflect a dynamic play of forces, for example, structure and form, material and expression.

Lohbado is a Confusionist

Lohbado comes out of the closet and admits his status as a Confusionist. Confusionism is a practice of noticing confusion or ignorance whenever possible in one's own mind in order to not let it hold one back from exploring life.

urge to dominate

Urge to dominate could lead to delusional states in which one sets oneself up as an authority on reality, to the point of feeling one knows just about everything. Sometimes one has an attitude of "I think therefore it's true." The antidote to the urge to dominate is to acknowledge one's limitations. One could aspire to learn and to question one's assumptions and strong emotions.

inspiration

Creative inspiration could be enhanced with an open mind and friendly attitude. Open mind means an ability to question or go beyond preconceived notions. Friendly attitude means to explore without being moralistic towards oneself or others.

the fountain of great joy

Pain happens, physical, mental. It's not pleasant to listen to someone complain, therefore, places of lamentation exist. Lohbado liked to pour his heart out to holes in the ground, or to spill his guts into cracks in the pavement, then to let it all go. Let water from the fountain flow into his mind and wash away sorrow. Let water from the fountain fill you with great joy.

morning of living lohbado

In the tradition of Hans Holbein's Dance of Death, Lohbado contemplated mortality and concluded a good approach to the unknown is to open the mind, be friendly and imaginative. No point being miserable over vain concerns.

it's ok to have fun

At what point did winter end and spring begin? Lohbado rode around contemplating various mysteries and realized it's ok to have fun. One is not obligated to feel miserable. It's even ok to enjoy your life sometimes.

In making videos, or any creative project, Lohbado's approach is to let the project take over, rather than trying to impose preconceived limits. A huge obstacle to creativity is not recognizing one's mental horizon. Everyone has a limit, or a point at which one says: enough is enough. This can be useful, but it could also be a nuisance. A rough analogy is antibodies. The immune system protects the body by reducing viral infections. But what happens when the immune system gets carried away and starts attacking the body?

Similarly, in the art studio, for example, suddenly everything feels dumb, boring, repetitive. One experiences creative block. That could be a point of breakthrough. When old tricks don't work anymore, then it's time to open up and see what happens. Lohbado noticed the tension and uptightness in his mind and in noticing it, was able to relax a little and keep going, to learn, explore, to see what happens. Instead of imposing his will, he relaxed and began to learn from what was going on and to let the project tell him what to do.

Lohbado went for a morning ride and passed by an area of rapid development. Montreal has undergone a lot of change in the past few years. Lohbado dreamed of one day living in a condominium as an expression of progress, into the future, a concrete situation. When riding, it's best to take side streets, as many traffic arteries could be dangerous for bicyclists.
