key to the palace of wisdom

Each individual operates within a sphere of consciousness. The sphere of consciousness or identity is contained or enveloped by that which is much vaster than the sphere. Harmonious functioning of the individual is affected by one’s ability to be aware of one’s limitations and by a willingness to learn or explore what lies beyond. Problems occur when one tries to solidify the circumference of one’s sphere of consciousness and to turn it into a universal rule for everyone. Each individual has their own circumference. Society contains an endless variety of spheres. Smooth functioning occurs with appreciation of difference, willingness to understand and openness to learn. Turbulence happens when one becomes dogmatic and moralistic, as if one’s personal preferences should be the universal standard.

A key to opening the door and entering the palace of wisdom is to recognize one’s limitations and to respect that everyone is different. Universal rules work great as guiding principles. Society couldn't function without a social contract. However, it would be cruel and unjust to apply universal rules without taking particular circumstances into account. One should also beware of projecting one’s likes and dislikes. Be careful before making statements about that which one does not understand. It’s best to slow down and relax. Allow time to become informed and to think things through. Far too often people act as if opinion is infallible and an expression of absolute truth.
